The installation of the first direct submarine fibre optic cable between Europe and Latin America will begin by early 2018 from Sines in Portugal. The project, worth EUR 170 million, will have a term of execution of 24 months, reports Correio de Manha.

During this period, about 10,000 kilometers of cable will be installed in the Atlantic between Alentejo in Portugal and the Brazilian city of Fortaleza.

According to Jesus Bernad, representative of the Hispano-Brazilian company Ellalink and responsible for the project, the link will allow “faster communication between the two continents using the latest generation equipment with an initial capacity of 50 TB, expandable later to 72 TB”. Bernad also said that the connection will allow for lower internet service prices and will provide greater security in the direct communication of data between Latin America and Europe.
