SAT3 Downtime Had Minimal Impact – Openserve

The SAT3 submarine cable was hit by an outage this week, with Openserve stating it minimised the impact on local Internet users by diverting international traffic.

Alphonzo Samuels, Openserve CEO, said there was a break in the cable about 53km into the Atlantic Ocean from their landing station in Melkbosstrand, at a depth of around 190m.

The cause of the break has not been determined, but Openserve diverted traffic off SAT3 to other submarine cables to avoid downtime.

Openserve engineers are working with vendors to repair the cable and restore all traffic to normal as quickly as possible, said the company.

The operator confirmed that all protected links are operating as normal and minimal impact may be felt by services running on unprotected links.

Samuels said South African Internet Exchange capacity carried on the SAT3 cable is unaffected, owing to the redundancy built into their global capacity design.
