By Submarine Cable NewsFeed

As you know, we have been publishing a monthly tally in the NewsFeed of the number of contract awards and the amount of cable contracted for as a way to measure how healthy the submarine cable industry is and how the market is progressing compared with TSA's forecasts.

Recently, we have noticed another development that might also give an indication of the health of the industry, or at least provide an interesting anecdote.

During the first 10 weeks of 2008, 15 new submarine cable projects have been announced or reported to TSA in one way or another. Unfortunately, we do not have a methodology to compare this to other time periods as we often come upon new projects in less formal ways (sometimes in strict confidence), unlike contract awards, which are quite public and can be easily dated.

There can be no doubt, however, that TSA hearing about 1.5 new projects per week is an excellent sign of the health of the industry and another indication that the good times are continuing.
