The country is set to get connected to the much coveted second submarine cable by March next year despite the ongoing delays in its installation work caused by the prevailing high tide in the Bay of Bengal.

“We are expecting the installation work to be completed by March, 2017”, Telecom Secretary  Md. Faizur Rahman Chowdhury told FE after visiting the landing site of the submarine cable in Patuakhali this weekend.

Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited, a listed company which is also a subsidiary of the Post and Telecommunication Division, is responsible for the construction and maintenance of the submarine cable.

“Seeing the progress that has been made so far, we feel that the remaining works will not take more than four to five months” Mr. Chowdhury, who is also the Chairman of BSCCL, said.

The SEA-ME-WE-5 cable will be approximately 20,000 kilometers long, and will provide broadband communications with a design capacity of 24 Terabits per second between South East Asia, the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East and Europe.

The cable will connect Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Djibuti, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Italy, Turkey and France via 19 landing points.

BSCCL is currently also responsible for the maintenance of the country's lone submarine cable connection linked with SEA-ME-WE 4.
