Press Release
SubOptic 2016 will be the ninth SubOptic conference in the series that started in Versailles in 1986, so we will be celebrating 30 years of SubOptic. The theme for the conference is “Emerging Subsea Networks- the World’s expanding treasure” and under this banner we expect to cover all the topics around the increasing intelligence and complexity of submarine networks.
Traditional point-to-point systems are more or less a thing of the past as systems are extended to Points of Presence and expanded into much larger meshed networks. These networks can be integrated into terrestrial networks with the intelligence of a control plane and a central coordination. Within these larger more complex networks however the traditional paradigms of wet plant reliability and finely tuned and optimised cable route engineering remain key topics for debate.
As the industry builds new cable systems providing ever expanding subsea infrastructure, the criticality of submarine systems to the global economy is never in doubt, however a dilemma faced by the industry is the increasing challenges that developers face in getting the approvals required to land and maintain a new cable.
As for SubOptic 2013, we are splitting the role of Programme Chair and Papers Chair and nominations for both positions are now approved. The Programme Chair will be assisted by a number of individuals from the industry, ensuring the breadth and depth expected of the programme selection and to challenge some of the established practices in the structure of the conference. The Papers Chair will be assisted by a Vice Chairman in each of the topic areas.
While we are looking at some adjustments to the structure of the programme, there will be the traditional ‘Call for Papers’ and peer review selection process. This will be launched in June 2015 for the topic areas selected by the Programme Committee.
If you have an idea that you think could form the basis of a new topic area, a tutorial/masterclass or any other presentation, or would like to offer help to either Alice or Mark, please don’t hesitate to contact us via our website www.suboptic.org.
