Columbus Networks has completed installation of a second cable landing station in Colombia, where the country's telecommunications providers interconnect their facilities with the undersea fiber optic cable network installed throughout the Caribbean and Latin America Region.
Columbus Networks built the new state-of-the-art landing station in Cartagena, Colombia, to provide its carrier customers network diversity. It also houses interconnection and terminal transmission equipment for powering a new undersea fiber optic system that connects Colombia directly with Florida called CFX.
“We have selected Cartagena because of the importance of Colombia on the region's overall growth and economic expansion,” said Paul Scott, president of Columbus Networks. “Broadband demand throughout the region is growing exponentially and Columbus Networks is investing heavily to stay ahead of its customers' needs.”
Installation of the new landing station marks the completion of the first stage of the CFX express route. The first segment of the express route connects Cartagena with Morant Point, Jamaica. The second segment connects Jamaica to Florida in Boca Raton, and enables the express fiber, which connects Colombia directly with Florida.
Once complete, the new multi-million dollar express route between Colombia and Florida will provide customers in Colombia with the most direct route, an increased performance and the lowest latency connection to the USA, adding diversity, redundancy, and improved network reliability, the company said in a statement.
The new purpose built, high security, landing station in Cartagena is constructed to withstand hurricane-level wind storms. Its modular design also enables Columbus Networks to easily expand building size to accommodate growth, the statement continued.
Columbus Networks' Colombia-Florida Sub Sea Fiber Project, includes more than 2,400 kilometers of deep-sea repeated high-capacity fiber optic cable. CFX is the largest network expansion project the company has undertaken since Columbus Communications acquired the company in September 2005.
