IT International Telecom Canada To Deploy Crosslake Fibre’s Lake Ontario Submarine Cable

Fiber-optic network services provider Crosslake Fibre has selected IT International Telecom Canada Inc. to deploy fiber cable across Lake Ontario. The 58-km submarine cable link is part of a 131-km fiber-optic network Crosslake will deploy to connect Toronto, Ontario, and Buffalo, NY (see “Crosslake Fibre plans submarine cable across Lake Ontario”).
IT International Telecom plans to use its C.S. IT Intrepid to transport and install the 96-fiber-pair cable in July and August of this year. Crosslake Fibre says that funding for the full project is in place and that it expects to have the submarine cable ready for service by this October. The marine survey for the project was completed last year and work has begun on both the shore ends of the underwater portion of the network as well as the terrestrial backhaul sections to Toronto and Buffalo. Once completed, the full network will offer customers physical diversity and lower latency than alternative paths, Crosslake Fibre asserts.
“The Crosslake Fibre cable system will provide much-needed physical redundancy and updated infrastructure along this critical route,” according to Mike Cunningham, CEO of Crosslake Fibre. “We are pleased to engage such an experienced firm as IT International Telecom, that has installed dozens of subsea cables worldwide, to install and bury the cable with a specialized cable installation vessel.”
Crosslake Fibre recently announced that Hexatronic Group AB will supply the fiber cable IT International Telecom will deploy (see “Hexatronic Group AB to supply fiber submarine cable for Crosslake Fibre’s Lake Ontario network”). The link across Lake Ontario is one of two underwater projects CrossLake Fibre has underway. The company also plans to run its Wall-LI submarine network between Wall, NJ, and Westbury, Long Island (see “Crosslake Fiber plans to connect NJ and NY with fiber-optic submarine cable”). The dark fiber provider expects that link will be ready for service in June 2019.
