The West Australian is reporting that Leighton Holdings is seeking environmental approval to lay fibre optic cable between Perth and Singapore for a $US160 million investment aimed at meeting soaring demand for high-speed telecommunications. Â Â Telecommunications supplier Alcatel-Lucent is contracted to construct the 4800km submarine cable system, with ASC planning to begin commercial operations in 2013. ASC will build, own and operate the system which it says has the capacity to deliver connection speeds of up to 100 gigabit per second transmission – or roughly eight times the capacity of similar regional routes.
