Lighthouse R&D Enterprises

Representatives of Lighthouse R & D Enterprises, Inc. will travel to Muscat, the Sultanate of Oman, to commemorate six years of scientific collaboration between the company and the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries Wealth. The two entities formed a partnership eight years ago to install one of the world’s first cabled ocean observatories.

The cutting-edge cabled observatories – installed in 2005 and 2010 off the coast of Oman – provide marine environmental information on a real-time basis. The six year operational history of the project means that scientists have a long, continuous time series of oceanic data – this helps them to differentiate natural seasonal or annual fluctuations from unusual events. Easier identification of unusual events leads to faster, more appropriate action being taken by decision makers to mitigate the often harmful consequences of inaction. Another benefit of the systems is that they are not exposed on the water’s surface, eliminating the possibility of weather damage, theft or vandalism.

The presentation will take place at the Muscat InterContinental Hotel at 08:45 am on Sunday, 13 November 2011. Lighthouse will provide a historical view of its relationship with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries Wealth and recognize the vision and support of the Sultanate of Oman in developing one of the world’s first cabled ocean observatories. Also highlighted in the presentation will be the technical and scientific achievements present in the Lighthouse systems and potential directions for future research. Oman continues to remain on the forefront of ocean observational science as other countries and consortiums begin developing and installing their own cabled systems.
