Brazilian optical transport specialist Padtec says that its submarine optical repeater showed consistent operation at depths of more than 6300 meters in recently conducted installation trials. The trials, held in the Caribbean Sea from April 30 to May 7 of this year, included both shallow and deep water phases at data rates including 100 Gbps.

Padtec conducted the tests with the aid of IT Telecom (which provided marine operations) and Nexans (which supplied the submarine cables). The shallow water tests included burial of the repeater on the ocean floor as well as sheave and tensile tests.
