The president of the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (INDOTEL) has spoken of the progress being made in the installation of the submarine, fiber-optic East&West Caribbean Cable according to a DR1 article.  The East-West Cable built by Cable & Wireless Communications is expected to be operational by December, said INDOTEL president Jose Rafael Vargas. It will link Jamaica and the Cayman Islands in the west of the Caribbean to the British Virgin Islands (Tortola) in the east. It will also land in the DR, considered one of the key markets in the region.
