BRUNEI will be a key point in establishing a new direct Internet route between the United States and Southeast Asia.

This follows the signing of an agreement between Brunei International Gateway Sdn Bhd (BIG) and BEST Cable Corporation Pte Ltd at the International Convention Centre yesterday.

BIG manages Brunei’s investment in submarine cable projects while BEST Cable Corporation is the owner of the BIMP-EAGA Submarine Terrestrial (BEST) Cable System, which will stretch over 5,092km connecting Sabah, southern Philippines and Brunei. It is estimated to cost US$200 million.

It will also facilitate information traffic from the BEST cable system to existing submarine cable connections in the country such as the Asia-America Gateway Cable (AAG) System and the South-East Asia Japan Cable System (SJC).
