Global Nexus Telecommunications Ltd (Global Nexus) announced today that it has successfully obtained a Bahamas operator’s license from the Utilities Regulation & Competition Authority (URCA).
The license grants Global Nexus the ability to land submarine cables in Freeport, Grand Bahama. These cables are planned to connect Freeport with Halifax, Canada; Fortaleza, Brazil and Varadero, Cuba and the US mainland in Boca Raton.
John Neal (CEO Global Nexus) said “This marks an important milestone in our plans to build a network that connects the Bahamas to Latin America, Canada, the US and the rest of the World. The Bahamas can become a strategic hub for traffic, offering important network diversity and a significant cost advantage when compared to existing routes. We aim to provide a valuable service to the carriers and operators that service these geographies; following the traditional ‘carriers carrier ‘model.â€
Global Nexus plans a multi-phased deployment, with work on first network segments (connecting Freeport to Boca Raton, US and Halifax, Canada) scheduled to begin in July 2010. This first phase will provide high capacity, single-hop connectivity between the Caribbean, Canada and the US. When complete, the overall network will bring much needed terabit-speed capacity to the region, along with important new routes, enabling customers to direct traffic either through or straight past the US mainland.
