New Zealand operator Spark has announced that the specialized undersea cable ship ‘Ile de Re’ has arrived in Auckland. The ship is heading to the middle of the Tasman Sea where it will continue laying the final section of the Tasman Global Access (TGA) undersea cable. Spark, Vodafone and Telstra plan to invest around NZD 100 million to build the TGA cable, which will cover 2300 km from Ngarunui Beach in Raglan, to Narrabeen Beach in Australia.

Upon completion, the TGA cable is expected to improve New Zealand’s international broadband connectivity. Other benefits are expected to include strengthening links into Asian markets, providing redundancy and resiliency, and upgrading the connection with the five main international cable systems currently serving Australia.
