The government of Timor-Leste is considering two recent proposals for the installation of a submarine fibre optic connection to Indonesia or Australia, Portuguese news agency Lusa reported.
The proposals, according to government sources, were presented by a consortium of Chinese group Huawei and British-Norwegian group Marine and another by Australia’s Nextgen (http://www.nextgengroup.com.au/).
Four possibilities are up for consideration, and the cheapest is the underwater link from Kupang on the Indonesian half of the island of Timor, with a link to the enclave of Oe-cusse Ambeno and another to Dili, with a cable distance of about 500 kilometres.
The second, of a cable distance of about 750 kilometres, would be between Darwin in northern Australia and Suai, in the south of Timor-Leste.
The third option (over 3,200 kilometres of cable) would be a link to Singapore, through Indonesian waters, in the Java Sea, to Dili and the last, the longest (6,500 km) would connect Singapore to the Timorese capital, but through international waters, south of the Indonesian archipelago.
