The government will design Batam in Riau as a hub for a submarine cable network to decrease Indonesia's reliance on other countries for telecommunications.

Communications and Information Minister Rudiantara said on Thursday that the network would be integrated with the existed Data Recovery Center (DRC) managed by the Batam Free Trade Zone Management Agency (BPK FTZ).

At present, there are four submarine cable network operators in Batam that connect the country with Singapore and Malaysia, namely PT Indosat, PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia, PT Moratel and NAP.
