Uruguay and Google signed an agreement to install a new fibre-optic submarine cable that will connect the Uruguayan city of Maldonado with Santos in Brazil and, together with another cable already being implemented, will unite and improve broadband connectivity between the US and the Southern Cone, reports Efe. This cable, which should be ready in late 2017, is 2,000 kilometers long and counts six pairs of fibres, increasing the bandwidth capacity of the current system to 90 Tbps. The project known as Tannat will require an investment of USD 30 million for Uruguay operator Antel and will complement the Monet system, which will connect Santos to Boca Raton (US). Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks will be responsible for the construction and installation of the cable.
