It is one of the sad-but-true facts of business that what you build, or make, may be absolutely critical to the survival of a hugely successful or important industry, but you yourself don't really make much money off it. The cheapest iPad costs around $600 but the Samsung processor which runs it, and without which the iPad is just a pretty, but useless slab of metal and glass, costs around $14 – about 2% of the market price. Prices of potatoes have jumped sharply in recent weeks, but rest assured that the farmer who actually plants and harvests it will get a small percentage of the final price you pay, with middlemen capturing the rest.
