By Alcatel-Lucent Press Release

Milan – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) has signed a two-year agreement with Politecnico di Milano, reinforcing the existing partnership in research, with a particular focus on next-generation optical networks. The contract calls for research activities in the fields of 100 Gbit/s technology, multi-service network design and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology for metro-access network applications.

The announcement was made during a press conference held today at Politecnico di Milano, by Giovanni Azzone, Vicar Pro-Chancellor of Politecnico di Milano, Mario Martinelli, professor of optic communications at Politecnico di Milano and director of PoliCom, Stefano Lorenzi, head of Alcatel-Lucent's activities in Italy, and Roberto Castelli, responsible for Academic & Research Partnerships for Alcatel-Lucent's Optics activities.

Alcatel-Lucent's objective is to further accelerate its product innovation by leveraging the high level skills of Politecnico's researchers and to reduce its time-to-market to be even more competitive in the marketplace. Politecnico's researchers will have the opportunity to take advantage of the recognized expertise of Alcatel-Lucent's research and development teams in Italy by interacting with the laboratories based in Vimercate, Genoa and in Southern Italy, as well as with Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs scientists who have conducted groundbreaking research in these areas and won numerous awards for their work.

“The relationship with major, innovative companies on strategic research projects is essential for universities like Poliecnico di Milano, which strives to become one Europe's most important universities, particularly now that public support for research is decreasing,” said Giovanni Azzone. “The interest companies demonstrate in us confirms the value of our research activity, and Alcatel-Lucent's decision to invest in us and its support for Fondazione Politecnico, makes us more confident for the future.”

“Today, we are taking another strong step forward in our long-term partnership with Politecnico di Milano, a partnership that has proven to be very effective over the years,” said Alcatel-Lucent's Stefano Lorenzi. “In a challenging economic environment such as today's, innovation is a critical activity – one that will yield more powerful, efficient and differentiated networks and services. Partnerships between private industry and the public sector are a critical part of this innovation engine and, in strengthening our cooperation with Politecnico, we are setting in place the building blocks to realize the next generation of optical networking.”

Leveraging its technology and innovation leadership, Alcatel-Lucent is spearheading the transformation to all-packet transport. Alcatel-Lucent integrates its experience, leading portfolio and innovative vision into optical and wireless transport solutions that support a broad range of blended service applications – such as triple play, Carrier Ethernet connectivity, and mobile backhaul – exceeding customer needs in the fixed, mobile, submarine and vertical markets. Alcatel-Lucent is the worldwide leader in optical networking since 2001, according to industry analyst firm Ovum RHK.
