Maldivian telecommunication giant Dhiraagu today entered into an agreement with NEC to lay a US$21 million (Rf278.8 million) fibre optic submarine cable network from North to South across the Maldives – the largest such network to be established in the island nation according to a Haveeru Online article. At a special ceremony held at Trader’s Hotel this afternoon, Dhiraagu’s Chief Executive (CE) Ismail Rasheed and NEC’s Executive Marketing Manager Koji Thakahashi signed the agreement to develop the network, which includes eight regions of the Maldives, connecting all parts of the country through a 1,017km fibre optic cable.
