“OCEANS ’15 MTS/IEEE WASHINGTON, DC” PROGRAM TO FOCUS ON OPPORTUNITIES RELATED TO CHANGE DRIVEN BY NEW TECHNOLOGIES, ECONOMIC FORCES, AND OCEAN-ATMOSPHERIC TRENDS

The premiere North American conference and exhibition on marine technology will be held at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center on National Harbor from October 19-22, 2015. The conference is now accepting abstracts for technical presentations.

The Technical Program draws its topics from the areas of interest of the co-sponsoring professional societies, the Marine Technology Society (MTS) and the Oceanic Engineering Society of IEEE (OES). The topics reflect the wide variety of ways in which marine technology and ocean engineering impact society every day, from advancements in ocean transportation and port security, to the extraction of offshore oil and the development of ocean-based alternate energy, to observing systems that measure the environmental changes that affect ocean quality and weather, to fisheries management and offshore aquaculture, and much, much more.

Abstracts submitted through the conference website are subjected to a peer review and related titles are organized into Tracks with Sessions of about four presentations. The deadline for submitting abstracts is June 10, 2015. About 500 papers in 12 concurrent sessions will be spread over three days and compiled in conference proceedings. The program will include tutorials, workshops and special sessions. In addition to the Core Topics common to all OCEANS conferences, the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) has selected five topics with special local interest, as well as broad international significance. According to Technical Program Chair Doug Wilson, “These topics were chosen by the LOC in keeping with the conference theme, Sea Change: Dive into Opportunity. They are:

-Emerging Arctic Challenges: Rapid changes in Arctic conditions are impacting Defense, Energy, and Transportation sectors, creating a need for new science and technology applications. OCEANS ’15 will bring together strategic, scientific, and technical considerations to address this pressing challenge.

-Marine Resiliency: Changing climate and ocean conditions are impacting the coastal and ocean environment. The mid-Atlantic region is still recovering from Sandy, and is one of the highest risk regions from sea level rise. OCEANS ’15 will address advances in marine and coastal resource protection, hazard forecasting and mitigation, and other aspects of resiliency.

-Environmental Intelligence: The ability to make critical decisions – tactical, management, economic, or scientific – in the marine environment requires accurate observations and forecasts. OCEANS ‘15 will address observations, sensors, platforms, forecast models, and data management and delivery systems necessary to support marine enterprises.

-Offshore Wind and Marine Renewable Energy: The growth of Offshore Wind and Marine Renewable Energy development, globally and in the Mid-Atlantic Region, has created opportunities for supporting science, technology, and engineering. OCEANS ’15 will highlight the present and future states of these energy sectors, from policy to technology.

-Law of the Sea: The United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea has relevance to energy, research, exploration, defense, and fisheries. The OCEANS ‘15 meeting in Washington, D.C. provides a forum for discussion of UNCLOS in the context of the science and technology that support the impacted sectors.

The list of Core Topics can be found at www.oceans15mtsieeewashington.org. An additional Core Topic has been added for this conference: 11.0 COMMERCIAL SUBMARINE TELECOMUNICATION SYSTEMS which will include the following subtopics: 11.1 Overall Network Design, Route Implementation and Regulatory Considerations 11.2 Route Planning (Including survey and marine sciences support) 11.3 Cable laying vessel and ROV/Plough designs 11.4 Installation 11.5 Operations and Maintenance 11.6 Cable Protection, Security and Repair 11.7 Upgrading and Modifying 11.8 Decommissioning, Reuse, Removal and Disposal 11.9 Applications of Recent Advances in Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering The Technical Program also includes special sessions and workshops. For more information, contact [email protected].

Tutorials: Proposals are welcome for half-day and full-day tutorials to be held on October 19. For more information and to submit a proposal, contact Tutorials Chair Doug Abraham at [email protected]. The deadline is June 10.

Exhibition and Patron Opportunities: Companies and organizations looking to increase their market presence have a great opportunity to reach a highly qualified target audience at OCEANS ’15 MTS/IEEE Washington, DC. The significant maritime presence in the area is expected to draw a strong local attendance from ocean-related industry, US government agencies, NGOs, the military, and students. Details of these opportunities can be found on the conference website.

Information about the sponsoring societies can be found at: Marine Technology Society (www.mtsociety.org) and IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society (www.oceanicengineering.org). MTS is an international non-profit professional society of ocean engineers, technologists, policy-makers, and educators with the mission to promote awareness, understanding, advancement and application of marine technology. IEEE/OES is an international non-profit professional society that focuses on all aspects of science, engineering, and technology that address research, development, and operations pertaining to all bodies of water.
