SAT3 subsea fibre optic cable system formerly owned by Nigeria Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) is set to go live early this month following massive rehabilitation by its new owners, NATCOM, the telecom consortium that acquired assets of the first national operator (FNO).

The relaunch of SAT3 will increase Internet bandwidth available to Nigeria. The cable has been down for over two years due to cuts in its cable routes in the Atlantic Ocean thus denying Nigerians access to the first subsea international fibre optic cable which brought broadband internet to the shores of the country.

In an exclusive interview with LEADERSHIP, Mr. Kamar Abass, managing director of NATCOM said “We will be getting it up in a matter of weeks up and fully in operation in a matter of weeks. In October, we will be launching. In some sense, it is a re-launch of operation in Nigeria since 2013.
