Bangladesh is set to enact a new law on maritime affairs on the back of the two verdicts from the international tribunal and court of arbitration, which have settled the long-standing disputes with Myanmar and India over the control of seas. The present Territorial Waters and Maritime Zones Act 1974 is set to be replaced by the Maritime Zones Act 2014. The draft law aims to improve internal security and open up new horizons of economic gain through use of maritime resources. It also aims to determine and define maritime boundary, its adjacent areas, continental shelf, exclusive economic zone etc.
