After SAT3, WACS, the 2nd submarine optical fiber cable to which Cameroon is connected, is expected to be operational from July 1, 2015, after the construction by Camtel, of the binding fiber optic between Limbe, city in the Southwest that is home to the point of siltation of the WACS, and Douala, the economic capital of Cameroon.
Commissioning of the WACS should contribute to the improvement of telecommunications services in the country.
WACS was drawn to Cameroon by a consortium of companies to which MTN International was part of. But, because Cameroonian regulations gave the exclusivity of the management of optics fiber to Camtel, the local subsidiary of MTN, which built the point of siltation of the WACS in Limbe, had to transfer the infrastructure to the Government, which then gave it to Camtel.
14 500 km WACS has a capacity of 5.2 Tbps, for a 40 gbps wave length. Its operation aims to de-saturate the SAT3. In the coming months, these cables will be joined on the Cameroonian territory by ACE, for which the Government and Orange have signed an operating agreement.
