The government said Monday that Taiwan's telecommunication companies will be allowed to join with Chinese companies in installing cables under the Taiwan Strait, a move expected to lower the cost of communicating between the two sides according to a Focus Taiwan article.  The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) said telecommunications between Taiwan and China currently rely on international undersea cables or satellites, often routed to third locations, that are not ideal in terms of either cost or technology. That has made it necessary to install a submarine cable that exclusively connects the two sides of the Strait, the MOTC said.
