Samoa will have a new submarine fiber optic cable by next year.

The Samoa Government has decided to sign on with the Transpacific Southern Cross Submarine Cable network which  now links Fiji with Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

At present the only fiber optic cable connecting Samoa to the outside world is the American Samoa Hawaii cable which links up American Samoa, Samoa and Hawaii.

Samoa's Communications Minister Tuisugaletaua Sofara Aveau says the new fiber optic cable would also provide a direct link to Savaii island.

Samoa Prime minister Tuilaepa Sailele says Samoa will continue using the American Samoa Hawaii cable even after the Transpacific Southern Cross Cable is laid.
