The 1Malaysia People’s Cable System (SKR1M), the 3,800-km submarine fibre optic cable linking Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, is capable of providing 4Tbps broadband capacity.

Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari said the capacity is much bigger compared to the existing 600-700Gbps generated through the domestic submarine cable developed since 25 years ago.

“Once fully completed, the SKR1M system capacity can also be upgraded in stages up to 12Tbps depending on demand,” he said at the symbolic opening of the SKR1M cable landing here today.

The RM619-million SKR1M project, with Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) contributing RM412 million and Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) another RM207 million, is a joint venture between the federal government through MCMC and TM.

The project was first implemented in 2015 and expected to be fully ready by June next year.
