Taipei, Oct. 21 (CNA) Chunghwa Telecom Co., Taiwan's largest telecom operator, signed an agreement Tuesday with leading carriers in Asia to build a multi-terabit submarine cable system that will provide direct fiber connectivity to five countries in the Trans-Pacific region.

Participants in the New Cross Pacific (NCP) cable network consortium include Chunghwa Telecom of Taiwan, KT Corp. of South Korea and major carriers from China and the United States, who signed the construction and maintenance agreement along with a supply contract in Busan, South Korea.

Chunghwa Telecom said construction is set to begin next month and is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2017.
