By Ciena Press Release
Ciena® Corporation, the network specialist, today announced its technical sessions, detailing the company’s repeatered and unrepeatered submarine network solutions, at SubOptic 2010 in Yokohama.
Industry Leaders
Forum: Ciena’s Stephen B. Alexander, the company’s chief technology officer and senior vice president, products & technology, will participate in a SubOptic roundtable plenary session on the future of the submarine cable industry, its technological developments and new market demands. Titled “Over the Horizon – The Future of the Industry,†Dr. Alexander will appear alongside representatives from Verizon, Global Marine Systems, Alcatel-Lucent, Equinix and Cornerstone Capital Partners. The session will be held May 14, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Pacifico Yokohama Conference Center’s main hall on the first floor.
Ultra Long-Haul
Presentation: Ciena’s Dr. John Sitch, senior technical advisor of digital and optical systems, will describe optical modulation formats for 40 Gbps and 100 Gbps ultra long-haul transmission for submarine systems. The presentation will also examine the suitability of coherently detected dual-polarization phase shift keying (DP-PSK) with digital signal processing (DSP) for submarine applications at 2000 km, 4000 km and 8000 km. Dr. Sitch will present as part of the conference’s May 13 session group titled “THU 1C Systems Design & Applications: Terabit Transmission Solutions,†which runs from 10:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in room 503.
Conference Poster
Session: A graphical poster on 40 Gbps coherent DP-PSK for submarine applications will be featured during the conference’s poster session (poster # SD 10 as part of the session’s System Design & Applications group). Ciena’s Mr. Robert Hadaway, senior director of submarine solutions, will be on hand to present copies of the poster, discuss the performance of DP-PSK transceivers over repeatered and unrepeatered links, and detail Ciena’s solutions portfolio for submarine networks during the session on May 12, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., in the conference hall’s third-floor foyer.
Ciena has extensive experience delivering advanced optical switching and ultra long-haul transmission platforms – including the CoreDirector®Multiservice Optical Switch and Optical Multiservice Edge 6500 (OME 6500) – to support subsea operators with 40G/100G technology to meet surging bandwidth demands. Verizon Business, Virgin Media and others use Ciena platforms and technology to provide immediate 40G/100G capacity upgrades and switched mesh restoration capabilities protecting against typhoons, cable cuts and natural catastrophes without losing network availability.
Ciena’s submarine solutions offer an unprecedented increase in existing network capacity, providing the ability to upgrade to 40G and 100G simply by replacing the terminal equipment of a link. With unique 40G/100G Adaptive Optical Engine technology, Ciena’s platforms can operate over existing network architectures – terrestrial and submarine – suspending the need for laying out additional cable.
