Google Lands Nuvem Subsea Cable in Portugal

Google has brought the Nuvem submarine cable ashore at Sines, adding Portugal to a system intended to connect the country with the Azores, Bermuda and the United States. The landing gives the project another completed shore-end milestone as it progresses toward service later this year.

Announced in 2023, Nuvem is a roughly 7,000km system with 16 fibre pairs and planned capacity of 384Tbps. Google is developing the cable as part of a broader Atlantic connectivity programme, with the route linking Sines to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina and intermediate landings in the Azores and Bermuda. The South Carolina landing was completed in May at DC Blox’s Myrtle Beach cable landing station.

In Portugal, the cable will use a landing station developed by Google in Sines. The company is also building a facility at Lagoa on Sao Miguel in the Azores for Nuvem and the separate Sol cable, while another landing station is planned at Annie’s Bay in Bermuda.

Portuguese operator MEO has joined the Nuvem project as an investor. Its participation places a local network operator alongside Google’s infrastructure programme and supports the system’s role in Portugal’s international connectivity. The Sines landing follows Google’s Equiano cable project in Portugal and gives the country another direct position in the company’s subsea network expansion.

Nuvem is designed to provide additional route diversity and capacity across the Atlantic as demand for cloud, AI and digital services grows. With the Sines landing complete, the remaining work will focus on bringing the multi-landing system into service.
