Claro Puerto Rico has announced a $35 million investment to bring the AMX-1 submarine cable to Ponce, creating the island's first redundant international internet connection outside its northern corridor. The new southern landing is designed to diversify Puerto Rico's external routes and improve the ability of the network to maintain service through storms, hurricanes, power interruptions or other contingencies.

AMX-1 is owned by América Móvil and was built and installed by Alcatel Submarine Networks. The system spans about 19,300 kilometres and connects North, Central and South America through 15 landing points in eight countries and territories, including Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. The Ponce extension adds another landing geography for traffic serving the island and a new back-up path alongside the existing northern infrastructure.

Claro said the investment will expand transmission capacity as well as international connectivity. Puerto Rico governor Jenniffer González Colón described the project as a way to diversify international communications routes and reinforce critical digital infrastructure. Ponce mayor Marlese Sifre Rodríguez said the landing could support the city's role in technology and economic development.

The system is designed for 100 gigabits per second transmission and total capacity of up to 90 terabits per second. ASN said the extension provides greater geographic diversity for telecommunications traffic between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. For Puerto Rico, the key outcome is a tangible resilience upgrade: a southern cable landing that reduces dependence on a single part of the island for international connectivity.
