Canalink begins laying the Gran Canaria-Fuerteventura-Lanzarote submarine data cable

Canalink has started deploying a new submarine-fibre system designed to strengthen connectivity across Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. The project is built around two independent routes totaling 553 kilometres, creating a ring configuration rather than relying on a single inter-island path. That design is significant for network resilience because it gives operators alternative routing options if one segment is unavailable.

The project has a reported budget of €34 million. Of that total, €23 million is being supported through the European Commission’s Connecting Europe Facility, which backs cross-border and strategic digital-infrastructure projects. The public funding component places the work within a wider European effort to improve network redundancy and connectivity in regions where geography makes terrestrial alternatives limited or costly.

For the Canary Islands, the installation marks a tangible marine-construction phase rather than an early planning announcement. The system is intended to improve inter-island transmission capacity and reliability as demand grows for digital services, cloud connectivity and international-network access. Canalink expects the work to be completed in September, provided sea conditions remain favorable. For cable owners and operators, the development is also a useful regional example of how public infrastructure funding can support route diversity at a local level, where a relatively short subsea system can still have an outsized effect on resilience.
