Toptana Begins Washington Cable Landing Station Build

Toptana Technologies has started construction of a submarine cable landing station at Ocean Shores on Washington’s Pacific coast. The company, an Indigenous-owned telecommunications infrastructure business owned by the Quinault Indian Nation, said a September 2 groundbreaking began work on a facility built to support as many as four submarine cable systems and connect them onward to terrestrial fiber networks. The first planned cable to use the site is Sta’O’Nuk, an AWS-owned system proposed between Washington and Japan. Toptana says the project is expected to give Washington state its first new cable landing station in over a quarter century. Assured Communications is serving as strategic partner, program manager, and operations service provider across planning, development, construction, and long-term operations. Toptana says the Ocean Shores station is intended to bring additional capacity and more diverse international routes between the Pacific Northwest and Asia-Pacific markets. The facility is also being developed to support future submarine systems beyond the initial AWS cable. In the Quinault language, the cable name translates as lightning serpent; the Nation authorized its use by AWS. The Quinault Indian Nation established Toptana to develop communications infrastructure that supports underserved communities as well as international connectivity. The Washington landing station is positioned as part of that broader effort, combining local infrastructure development with new trans-Pacific cable access.
