Canalink Lands Base4 Subsea Cable in Lanzarote

Canalink has completed the first deployment phase of the Base4 submarine cable by landing it at Playa Honda on Lanzarote. The work forms part of Atlántica, the project previously known as the Gran Canaria-Fuerteventura-Lanzarote submarine ring. Canalink and the source describe the landing as a construction milestone for a new fiber ring serving the eastern Canary Islands, with the wider objective of strengthening telecommunications infrastructure across the archipelago through additional submarine routes.

Atlántica is designed around two separate cable paths linking Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote, creating alternative routes for data traffic. The eastern segment connects Ojos de Garza in Gran Canaria, Puerto del Rosario in Fuerteventura, and Playa Honda in Lanzarote. The western path links Barranco de Tenoya, Corralejo, and Playa Blanca. The overall budget is nearly €34 million, including €23 million from the European CEF Digital mechanism.

The project’s importance is resilience for island connectivity rather than simply adding another point-to-point route. By using two routes across the three islands, Atlántica is intended to provide traffic diversity and strengthen the Canary Islands’ telecoms backbone. Founded in 2004 and based in Tenerife, Canalink is owned by the island council through ITER, its institute focused on technology and renewable energy. It participates in ACE and leases WACS capacity, among other domestic and international links.

Canalink’s Base4 work is being paired with other connectivity initiatives in the islands. One additional branch extends toward southern Fuerteventura, connecting at Costa Calma and adding another entry point into the backbone network; that branch received a public grant of more than €4.8 million. The present confirmed status is that the Lanzarote landing has been completed. The next stated milestone is completion of the Ring, or Atlántica, project, scheduled for September 2026. Canalink's existing portfolio provides context for the build: it participates in the ACE system, leases capacity on WACS and operates domestic links among the islands and to mainland Spain. Atlántica adds a locally focused resilience layer to that broader international and inter-island footprint.
