Fugro Clarifies Argentina Telecom Cable Survey

Fugro has clarified that its recent work off Argentina was a seabed survey for a large international subsea telecommunications cable project. The company says SubCom, the US cable-system supplier, contracted Fugro for the activity; the UK government did not. Fugro issued the clarification on September 18 after media reports attributed the work to a different client. It also reiterated that the Fugro Supporter's assignment was unrelated to hydrocarbon prospecting, exploration or production in the area.

The statement identifies the commercial relationship and the type of marine work, but it does not name the cable system or disclose its route, landing locations, length, capacity, survey technique or delivery schedule. Fugro says only that the planned system will connect multiple locations. The company also explains that the vessel's recent movements to and from Uruguay supported resupply and crew mobilisations. Those calls therefore should not be treated as announced cable landings, route changes or separate construction milestones.

For cable developers, seabed surveying is a project-development step that provides information needed before route engineering and installation decisions can advance. The confirmation that SubCom engaged Fugro establishes a direct link between a major system supplier, a specialist survey contractor and an active South Atlantic field campaign. It does not, however, establish that cable manufacture, marine installation or service activation has begun. Keeping those stages separate matters because survey activity can precede later investment, permitting and construction decisions by a considerable period.

The verified current status is limited but material: Fugro Supporter conducted seabed survey work off Argentina for SubCom's international telecom-cable project, and its Uruguay movements served operational logistics. Fugro has not announced a completion date for the wider system, a start date for cable laying or the identities of the locations to be connected. No additional project timetable appears in the statement. The next reportable milestone will therefore require a further confirmed disclosure from SubCom, Fugro or another project authority, such as a named route, landing plan, supplier award, installation start or service target.
