The Chennai-Andaman & Nicobar Islands (CANI) submarine cable system project has received clearance from India’s National Board for Wildlife (NBWL).

The initiative will provide fibre optic connectivity between eight islands of Andaman and Nicobar and the Indian mainland, providing sufficient bandwidth for voice and data services and offering 100Gbps speeds.

India’s Economic Times reports that any infrastructure projects that pass through protected areas must be approved by the NBWL, which operates under the country’s environment ministry.

The project will span roughly 2200km, and has already received other required environmental clearances, including from the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ).
