Argentina’s Chubut province has taken a formal step toward expanding the country’s international subsea connectivity. Chubut’s government and the National Communications Agency, ENACOM, signed a letter of intent under the Chubut Hub Digital 2030 initiative. The agreement supports work on telecommunications networks, data centers and broader connectivity, while advancing a proposal for an additional international submarine fiber landing point.

The proposal is significant because Argentina’s existing international subsea cable landings are concentrated at Las Toninas, outside Buenos Aires. A landing point in Chubut could give the country another geographic option for international connectivity and strengthen the province’s pitch as a digital-infrastructure location. The provincial government cites local energy availability, geography and long-distance connectivity assets as advantages in seeking finance for the initiative.

The announcement does not identify a cable system, landing-site location, construction timetable, investor or supplier. Those details will determine whether the letter of intent progresses into a defined subsea project. For now, it establishes cooperation between Chubut and the national communications agency around infrastructure planning rather than confirming a completed cable investment.

Argentina currently has international cable connections serving links with Brazil, Central America and the United States. Cirion operates a landing station in the Las Toninas area, while a domestic cable connects Punta Dungeness and Cabo Espiritu Santo in Tierra del Fuego. Chubut’s proposal therefore points to a potential new international gateway, subject to further project and financing decisions.
