Claro strengthens Puerto Rico’s connectivity with a second AMX-1 landing point

Claro has outlined a US$35 million project to add another shore facility to the AMX-1 network in Puerto Rico. The planned site would give the island an additional physical entry point into that regional system. Its value is not merely more capacity: a separate landing facility can reduce dependence on one location and improve the choices available when a shore-end, station or local route is disrupted.

That is especially relevant in the Caribbean. Puerto Rico’s international traffic depends on submarine infrastructure and the region must plan for weather exposure as well as the practical risks of concentrated cable approaches. Adding a second landing facility to an existing system is a different investment from commissioning a new international cable, but it can be a quicker way to improve local resilience and service continuity.

AMX-1 connects markets in the Americas and Caribbean, so the planned facility also has implications for companies using Puerto Rico as a regional connectivity point. Claro describes the work as an answer to rising data demand alongside its resilience benefits. For cable owners, the announcement provides a useful example of an operational investment focused on the landing layer: network hardening can be achieved through route and station diversity even when the underlying subsea system already exists. The project will therefore be worth watching for its delivery timetable and for any indication of how the new facility changes the island’s available paths to international networks.
