Digital Realty Plans Los Angeles Cable Landing Station

Digital Realty plans to develop a new cable landing station at its LAX12 data center in Los Angeles in partnership with Assured Communications. Announced September 22, 2026, the project would place subsea landing infrastructure alongside Digital Realty's existing colocation and interconnection services. The company expects the facility to begin supporting cable systems in 2028, creating a new gateway for traffic moving between Asia Pacific and North America. The plan would also extend Digital Realty's role from hosting traffic inside data centers to operating the shore-side facilities that bring international capacity onto land.

The planned station is designed to give subsea cable operators a turnkey location for landing and powering their systems. From LAX12, operators could connect into terrestrial systems and reach Digital Realty's local ecosystem of carriers, network operators and cloud platforms. Digital Realty says the integrated arrangement would reduce the separation between the landing site and the digital infrastructure that distributes capacity onward. Assured Communications, which specializes in subsea infrastructure design and delivery, is supporting the project's design, engineering and construction. Digital Realty has not yet identified any cable system that has committed to land at the facility.

For cable owners, the significance is the proposed combination of beach-side infrastructure, power, colocation and network interconnection within one operating environment. Digital Realty says this model is intended to offer carriers, cloud providers and content platforms additional routes and greater flexibility between the Asia-Pacific region and North America. The development also expands the role of a major data-center operator at the physical handoff between international submarine systems and domestic terrestrial networks in the Los Angeles market.

The project remains in development, so its immediate status is a planned facility rather than an operating landing point. Assured Communications is advancing the engineering and construction work, while Digital Realty is positioning LAX12 as the host site. The next confirmed milestone is the 2028 target for beginning cable support. The announcement does not provide a construction-start date, investment figure or named landing customer, leaving those items for future project updates.
