EGS says it has begun survey work for the submarine cable system Fibra Optica Austral (FOA), a digital route in the Chilean Patagonia, using its RV Geo Explorer. The FOA undersea cable system will connect the southern city of Puerto Montt to the Patagonian cities of Caleta Tortel, Punta Arenas, and Puerto Williams.

EGS says the FOA cable will also enable Comunicación y Telefonía Rural S.A. (CTR) to upgrade the rural terrestrial infrastructure. The FOA cable will also enable the local service provider of telephone and internet access to offer remote Patagonian communities internet access.

According to EGS, Chilean minister of transport and telecommunication Paola Tapia visited the RV Geo Explorer and stated that internet connectivity will improve, and internet blackout will be avoided in southern Chile with the FOA cable system. The system can set a precedent for the Chilean Government's future development projects, says EGS.

EGS does not expect adverse weather conditions to impede the RV Geo Explorer team's survey operation progress in these remote areas.
