Google’s Fiji Subsea Landing Project Advances

Construction of Google’s planned data centre at Natadola is progressing well, Fiji Deputy Prime Minister and Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica said, following earlier concerns from local landowners about transparency and the full scope of the development.

The project has been described as including an ICT facility and a subsea cable landing facility. Kamikamica said the government’s position is that the required legal and consultation processes have been followed, including engagement with the landowners connected to the site. He said his understanding was that the relevant landowners had broadly agreed to the investment and that he had not received further issues since then.

Kamikamica also said Google had worked to ensure compliance with Fiji’s laws, including obligations around landowner engagement. He added that the company was interacting with communities around the data centre as part of the wider investment.

According to Kamikamica, the facility is expected to be powered by solar energy, with a related opportunity for landowners through land leasing for a proposed solar farm. He described the investment as significant for Fiji and said Google’s presence would strengthen the country’s standing in telecommunications and information and communications technology. He also expressed optimism that the development could support further opportunities in Fiji’s ICT sector.
