Indonesian Subsea Cable Operators Upgrade Capacity with Ciena

Two Indonesian digital infrastructure operators have upgraded their submarine cable systems with Ciena’s technology. The move aims to add capacity on routes that carry internet traffic between Indonesian islands and overseas networks through Batam and Singapore.

Matrix Networks and NAP Info Lintas Nusa, which operate the Matrix Cable System as strategic partners, have activated Ciena’s GeoMesh Extreme solution powered by WaveLogic 6 Extreme on the Batam-Jakarta section of the cable. The upgrade delivers 1 terabit per second per (Tb/s) wavelength across the 1,055-kilometre link, according to the companies.

In simpler terms, the upgrade allows more data to travel over the same submarine cable without companies having to lay a new one. The Matrix Cable System connects Indonesia to the internet and cloud hubs through Singapore, and the Batam-Jakarta section forms part of that route.

The deployment was carried out with Terrabit Networks, Ciena’s accredited channel partner. Ciena Services oversaw pre-deployment engineering, network build-out and lifecycle management, according to the announcement.

“Activating 1 Tb/s per wavelength on our Batam-Jakarta submarine segment is not simply a capacity upgrade — it is a statement about where Matrix NAP Info stands in the global connectivity landscape,” says Omar Syarif Nasution, director of Matrix NAP Info. He adds that the deployment would help customers access the bandwidth needed for the artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud era.

Separately, Biznet has deployed Ciena’s WaveLogic 5 Extreme on the international link of its Biznet Nusantara Cable System-1. The cable system provides inter-island connectivity across Java, Sumatra and Bangka Islands. The upgrade is intended to support 400G high-speed services and increase capacity between local and global networks.

Biznet says the work also improves capacity on the Batam-Singapore link, which supports international gateway capacity and access to global services. The deployment builds on earlier collaboration with Ciena across Java, Bali, Sumatra, Batam, Bangka, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Flores.
