Keppel has announced that Keppel Infrastructure Fund (KIF) has acquired subsea firm Global Marine.

KIF has acquired a 100 percent stake in the cable laying and repair company from J.F Lehman & Company.

Details of the transaction have not been shared.

Headquartered in the UK, Global Marine operates a fleet of six vessels, providing mission-critical maintenance and installation services for subsea fiber optic cable networks.

The company has a “strong record” of contract renewals with telcos, hyperscalers, and global equipment suppliers, according to Keppel.

Global Marine Group comprises three business units: Global Marine, which installs and services fiber optic cables; OceaniQ, subsea cable routing and engineering; and SubConnect, expertise in subsea fiber optic testing and solution provider.

“We are excited to complete this investment in GMG. It is a rare and unique opportunity to acquire a world-leading provider of subsea cable maintenance and installation services. This investment builds on Keppel’s digital infrastructure strategy which includes the Bifrost Cable system, and now, Global Marine,” said Christina Tan, CEO of fund management and chief investment officer of Keppel.

She added: “With a substantial proportion of Global Marine’s business secured by long-term contracts with huge growth potential, especially in Asia, we are poised to deliver attractive risk-adjusted returns to our investors.”

Last year, Keppel was reportedly discussing plans for new subsea cables between Vietnam and Singapore.

Keppel’s data center arm, Keppel Data Centres, operates around 23 data centers across 13 markets. It currently has a presence in Sydney, Australia; Hong Kong; Jakarta, Indonesia; Dublin, Ireland; Milan, Italy; Tokyo, Japan; Cyberjaya and Johor, Malaysia; Singapore; Taoyuan, Taiwan; Eindhoven, the Netherlands; and Cardiff and London, UK.

Keppel's data center real estate investment trust, Keppel DC REIT, owns a number of data centers globally. The company sold its Frankfurt facility in Germany last month.
