LD Armateurs has acquired three platform supply vessels for conversion into ships that will install and repair subsea telecommunications cables. Announced on November 5, the investment will develop a company-owned fleet alongside LDA's existing cable activities. The vessels remain under construction, so the acquisition marks a commitment to future capability rather than an immediate addition to operational cable capacity.

The company expects delivery of the vessels in the second quarter of 2027. They will subsequently move to a conversion yard for specialist cable equipment, with service entry planned for the first quarter of 2028. Each is to carry 2,800 tonnes of cable and use hybrid-electric propulsion. Those specifications describe the planned converted ships; they do not establish how much cable any individual project will require.

The plan builds on an established role in optical-fiber cable operations. LDA's cable-ship business already describes services covering installation, maintenance and protection, including work in deep water and shallow coastal areas. Its published portfolio includes vessel management for ASN and Optic Marine Group. That background puts the new investment alongside work undertaken for other cable companies, while the acquisition announcement identifies ownership of the new vessels as the next step.

LDA's description of its cable business also connects new infrastructure with the need to repair failed links. It emphasizes qualified crews, technical resources and the ability to undertake missions in remote areas. For cable owners, this distinction matters: a fleet's contribution includes maintaining communications after faults as well as building connections. The announced vessels are intended for both installation and repair, rather than being presented as construction-only assets.

The investment is accompanied by the launch of the LDA Academy. The company says the initiative will support recruitment, training and professional development as its activities expand. Bringing workforce preparation alongside vessel conversion addresses the human side of the program: new hulls and specialist equipment will need crews with the corresponding capabilities. The academy is part of the announced development program, while the new cable ships' service target remains early 2028.
