The Regional Government of Madeira has signed a contract for the supply of a submarine cable connection to the continent, worth EUR 13.6 million. The contract was signed between Emacom – Telecomunicacoes da Madeira, a company belonging to the Empresa de Electricidade de Madeira (EEM) and Ellalink Ireland, a subsea communications operator.
Madeira is already connected to mainland Portugal through a submarine system called Cam Ring, but this is expected to become obsolete in the medium term. Within a year, Madeira and the Portuguese continent will be connected by a new pair of optical fibres linking Funchal to Lisbon over a distance of 1,100 km and with a total capacity of 18 Tbps.
