Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) announced that the SEA-ME-WE 5 Consortium have completed the 20,000-km subsea cable infrastructure developed by a 16-nation consortium. The SEA-ME-WE 5 subsea cable system spans over 16 countries from Southeast Asia to Western Europe. It is designed with a capacity of 24 TBps on three-fibre pairs.
The SEA-ME-WE 5 submarine cable’s 100Gbps technology is expected to meet the quadrupling of bandwidth demand between Europe and Asia. The SEA-ME-WE 5’s main endpoints are PoPs and not just Cable Landing Stations. Sri Lanka has been given full landing status by the SEA-ME-WE 5 consortium which will pave the way to establish a global point of presence in Sri Lanka very soon, SLT said.
