Subco Details Three New APAC Subsea Cable Systems

SUBCO has announced APX North, APX East-2 and APX West, three new 24-fibre-pair subsea systems aimed at capacity growth across the Indo-Pacific. The September 22, 2026 announcement links the program to traffic generated by AI infrastructure and would add routes among Australia, Japan, Guam, Los Angeles, Singapore and Indonesia. SUBCO is targeting completion of all three projects in 2029, creating a coordinated build across Asian, Australian and trans-Pacific corridors.

APX North is planned as a 9,500 km link from Sydney to Japan through Guam. SUBCO says the design would give Australia its first direct hypercable route to Guam's interconnection hub and establish a direct Australia-Japan path. Switched branching units, similar to those used on SMAP, would let chosen fibre pairs continue between Australia and Japan without landing in Guam. That design provides customers with options for both hub access and a through route on the same cable system.

For the eastern leg, APX East-2 would span 10,000 km between Guam and Los Angeles, supporting additional route diversity from the United States toward Japan and Australia. APX West is designed as a 4,600km cable from Perth to Singapore, with branches serving Jakarta and Batam. Switching into or around those Indonesian interconnection hubs is intended to add resiliency and flexibility as regional traffic grows. Together, the three systems create linked choices across the Pacific and between Australia, Indonesia and Singapore.

SUBCO says the wider construction program will require more than 40,000km of cable installation in just over three years. Founder and Co-CEO Bevan Slattery tied that scale to the volume of traffic expected between AI facilities and their customers, describing demand in the hundreds of terabits per second. The immediate delivery work is commercial and operational: SUBCO is finalising cable-supply and vessel arrangements and expects each system to reach Contract in Force by early next year. The company also plans to present the program at Submarine Networks World in Singapore on September 23–24, 2026.
