Welcome to this video tutorial on how to use the SubTel Cable Map/a>. My name is Kieran Clark, Lead Analyst at SubTel Forum, and by the end of this tutorial, you will have learned how to use the Select Tool to highlight systems of your choosing and view some basic stats associated with your selection.
Opening the Tool and Selecting Layers
Start by clicking the Select Tool icon in the upper right-hand corner of the map.
Choose the layer or layers you would like to have available for selection by checking its corresponding box.
By clicking the button in the upper right corner of the Select Tool panel, you can also make all layers selectable or de-selectable.
Selecting Map Features
Click the downward pointing arrow on the Select button to choose your method of selection.
Select by Point allows you to select features at a clicked point.
Select by Rectangle allows you to select features by drawing a rectangle over the desired selection area.
Select by Line allows you to select features by drawing a line through your desired items.
For this tutorial, we will be using the “Select by Rectangle” option.
With the “Select” button pressed – indicated by the button turning dark green – drag your mouse on the map to draw a rectangle and create a new selection.
Press the Shift key while dragging the mouse on the map to add additional features to the selection.
Press the Ctrl key while dragging the mouse on the map to remove selected features from the selection.
The number of selected features will display next to the corresponding layer in the Select Tool panel.
Analyzing Your Selection
Click the ellipsis (…) next to a layer in the Select Tool panel to open the Selection Actions drop-down menu and view a list of actions you can now take with your selection.
Click Zoom to in order to center the selected elements and fit them in the map window.
Click Pan to in order to center the selected elements in the map window at the current zoom level.
Click Flash in order to make the selected elements flash on the map.
Click Show pop-up to show details on the selected element in the Information Pane if you have selected only a single feature.
Click Add a marker to add a map marker on the selected element if you have selected only a single feature.
Click Clear selection to clear the current selection.
If you would like to run some basic analysis on your selection, click Statistics.
In the new “Statistics” pop-up window, you will be able to select any data field associated with your selection and view a list of preconfigured stats.
For this example, we will choose the “DesignCapacity” field to view the sum total capacity, mimimum and maximum capacity, average capacity and the standard deviation for all of our selected cable systems.
This process allows you to get basic details on a given cable route or region that can be used in a report or presentation.
Once you are done viewing stats, click the “OK” button or the X in the top right corner of the Statistics pop-up to close it.
If you are finished with your selection, click “Clear” to clear all selected features and then close the Select Tool panel.
