A Vodafone Group unit forged a unique sponsorship deal with a UK-based museum which creates a link between some of the earliest trans-oceanic connectivity and modern communications services.

Vodafone Intelligent Solutions (VOIS) is taking up a position as the lead sponsor of the PK Network, a freshly minted global initiative involving industry partnerships for the Porthcurno Museum of Global Communications.

The arrangement is notable because the town of Porthcurno in the southwest of the UK was a landing site for early subsea telegraph cables, providing a degree of circularity to today’s submarine cables and digital communications services.

Vodafone explained the PK Network is a global initiative to encourage the telecoms industry to support the museum.

It stated the museum highlights the history and evolution of telecommunications technology from the early 1800s to the present day.

VOIS will back educational activities along with programmes covering science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, Vodafone explained.

It noted seeking industry partners to back the museum is in-keeping with the history of telecoms services involving consortiums, highlighting a partnership VOIS struck with Accenture in 2024 to pioneer an open model for such collaboration.

Julia Twomlow, CEO and creative director at the museum, said it is an educational charity and so relies “on funding and donations”.

VOIS CEO Gary Adey said the museum helps to spotlight the infrastructure involved in providing communications services.
