Project to Build Gigantic Fiber Optic Cable Between Chile and Asia: Government Awards Feasibility Study

The Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications (MTT) through the Undersecretariat for Telecommunications (Subtel) awarded the tender for the economic, technical and legal feasibility study of the submarine cable project “Asia-South America Digital Door, with the that the first digital road between the two continents would be created.
The winners of the tender were the consortium made up of Telecommunications Management Group Inc and WFN Strategies LLC.
Eight proposals from both national and international companies and consultants were received in the process. In this vein, the TMG-WFN consortium managed to deliver the most complete proposal by winning 4 of the 6 evaluation criteria.
To carry out the studies, the consortium will receive US$2,982,532 from the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), an institution with which the Ministry of Transport in July a agreement under which it is committed to funding the study.
The consortium should begin the study from this 04 September and will extend its work throughout the first half of 2020.
“Our main objective is to make Chile a Digital Hub of Latin America, a region that has great potential for users and the Asia-South America underwater cable undoubtedly contributes to that. This initiative will also enable our country to better confront the digital revolution, facilitating the installation of data centers, trade, entrepreneurship and the creation of new businesses between the two continents,” she said Transport and Telecommunications, Gloria Hutt.
Meanwhile, the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Pamela Gidi, stated that “this project, once completed will be the cornerstone to consolidate local digital economies, bringing benefits for users and for all productive sectors, the who will be able to access new technologies such as the Internet of Things, 5G, the cloud and Artificial Intelligence.”
